Isaiah 54:4-57:13

“Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame.   Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood. 5 For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;  he is called the God of all the earth. 6 The Lord will call you back  as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit—a wife who married young, only to be rejected,” says your God. 7 “For a brief moment I abandoned you,  but with deep compassion I will bring you back. 8 In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,”  says the Lord your Redeemer. 9 “To me this is like the days of Noah,  when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again. 10 Though the mountains be shaken  and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,”  says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 “O afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted,  I will build you with stones of turquoise,  your foundations with sapphires. 12 I will make your battlements of rubies,  your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones. 13 All your sons will be taught by the Lord,  and great will be your children’s peace. 14 In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed;  it will not come near you. 15 If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;  whoever attacks you will surrender to you.

16 “See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame  and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to work havoc; 17  no weapon forged against you will prevail,  and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,  and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord.

Isaiah 55

Invitation to the Thirsty

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money,  come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,  and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. 3 Give ear and come to me;  hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. 4 See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the peoples. 5 Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations that do not know you will hasten to you, because of the Lord your God,  the Holy One of Israel,  for he has endowed you with splendor.”

6 Seek the Lord while he may be found;  call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him,  and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,  so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish,  so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire  and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy  and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field  will clap their hands. 13 Instead of the thorn bush will grow the pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown,  for an everlasting sign,  which will not be destroyed.”

Isaiah 56

Salvation for Others

This is what the Lord says:

“Maintain justice  and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man who does this,  the man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,  and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

3 Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the Lord say,  “The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.” And let not any eunuch complain,  “I am only a dry tree.” 4 For this is what the Lord says: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,  who choose what pleases me  and hold fast to my covenant—5 to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name  that will not be cut off. 6 And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to serve him, to love the name of the Lord,  and to worship him, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it  and who hold fast to my covenant—7 these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” 8 The Sovereign Lord declares— he who gathers the exiles of Israel: “I will gather still others to them  besides those already gathered.”

God’s Accusation Against the Wicked

9 Come, all you beasts of the field,  come and devour, all you beasts of the forest! 10 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep. 11 They are dogs with mighty appetites;  they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding;  they all turn to their own way,  each seeks his own gain. 12 “Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine!   Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better.”

Isaiah 57

The righteous perish,  and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away,  and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. 2 Those who walk uprightly  enter into peace;  they find rest as they lie in death.

3 “But you—come here, you sons of a sorceress,  you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes! 4 Whom are you mocking?   At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars? 5 You burn with lust among the oaks  and under every spreading tree; you sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags. 6 The idols among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion;  they, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings  and offered grain offerings.    In the light of these things, should I relent?7 You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill;  there you went up to offer your sacrifices. 8 Behind your doors and your doorposts  you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed,  you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love, and you looked on their nakedness. 9 You went to Molech with olive oil  and increased your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away;  you descended to the grave itself! 10 You were wearied by all your ways, but you would not say, ‘It is hopeless.’ You found renewal of your strength,  and so you did not faint.

11 “Whom have you so dreaded and feared  that you have been false to me, and have neither remembered me  nor pondered this in your hearts? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me? 12 I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you. 13 When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But the man who makes me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”

Psalm 118:22-29

22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;

23 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.

27 The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you.

29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Proverbs 24:15-16

15 Do not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man’s house, do not raid his dwelling place;

16 for though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.

Philippians 1:21-2:11

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

Philippians 2

Imitating Christ’s Humility

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,  did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man,  he humbled himself and became obedient to death—  even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
